A Brief History
Radio Free Radford was first founded in 2006 by a group of students who wanted a different, more modern approach to student media. Finally gaining recognition as an official outlet of student media here at Radford University, Radio Free Radford has always been at the forefront of innovation.
In 2016, we set our standards higher than ever before! During the summer of 2016, the studio moved and took its full-time live broadcast status. Having new management, we rebranded Radio Free Radford with a whole new feel. We focused on engaging with Radford University and the community while playing music that everyone wants to hear.
In 2021, we had the honor of having RFR played live in the Bonnie with all our host/hostess showing off their amazing stories for all of Radford to hear and enjoy. We are focused on reconnecting the club with each other and the community as well. Radio Free Radford is recognized as a safe space for all.
In 2022, Radio Free Radford along with all of Highlander Student Media moved from Tyler room 025 to Bonnie room 229. This is the first time, the Highlander Student Media was with the student and not hidden away from everyone.
In 2023, Radio Free Radford had gained more staff than it has had in a long time. There was 23 hosts/hostess on the staff all making their own stories.
In 2024, the staff continued to rise and on February 14th 2024 (Valentine’s Day), Radio Free Radford was proud to officially relaunch the website from the ground up thanks to
Benjamin Goldfeder and an $80 cash donation to student media from Dr. Sam Jennings in the communications department.
